fair – ein Statement in der Zeit

fair versteht (verstand) als ein Dialogforum auf hohem Niveau, in dem Künstler, Architekten, Kunsttheoretiker und Philosophen ungekürzt zu Wort kommen (konnten). Es war uns vor allem wichtig, ein Bewusstsein zum Ausdruck zu bringen, dass sich grundsätzlich über den Zusammenhang von Kunst, Ästhetik und Ethik im Klaren ist. Es ging um künstlerische und kulturelle Positionen, die eine klare Haltung gegenüber der Gesellschaft einnehmen, verbunden mit sozialer und gesellschaftlicher Relevanz. Uns interessierte die conditio humana, die Bedingungen des Menschseins am Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts – ausgedrückt durch Kunst, Architektur und philosophische Betrachtungen. Es ist (war) der Versuch der Wiederbelebung eines kulturellen Diskurses, der durch die ökonomischen Interessen und Zwänge des Kunst- und Kulturbetriebes zusehends verdrängt wurde.
Der inhaltliche Bogen spannt(e) sich von bildender Kunst über Architektur, Design, Experimentalfilm bis zu aktuell philosophischen und gesellschaftskritischen Themen. Einen Schwerpunkt bildeten die Ausgaben über Zentral- und Osteuropa (fair CEE), wo wir aus den Ländern Polen, Rumänien, Ungarn, Serbien, Slowenien und Russland berichteten. In 4 Jahren wurden 13 Ausgaben fair + 3 Ausgaben fair CEE mit einem Gesamtvolumen von 776 Seiten herausgegeben.

Studium an der Kunstuniversität Linz. Herausgabe u. a. des Zeitungsmagazins ST/A/R mit Heidulf Gerngross (Gründung und gemeinsame
Publizierung bis 2007). 2008 Gründung von fair – Zeitung für Kunst & Ästhetik, Wien/Berlin und Publizierung von 13 Nummern.
Realisierung von Kunstfilmen, Installationen und Kuratierung von Ausstellungen. 2009 Beteiligung bei der Biennale Venedig mit der Film-
installation from threshold to threshold. Zahlreiche Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen im In- und Ausland. Das künstlerische Werk umfasst
Installationen, Malerei, Film, Fotografie und Textarbeiten. Lebt und arbeitet als Künstler und Herausgeber in Wien.

How does one achieve eternal bliss? By saying ARMANI / dada. How does one become famous? By saying ARMANI
/ dada. With a noble gesture and delicate propriety. Till one goes crazy. Till one loses consciousness. How can one
get rid of everything that smacks of journalism, worms, everything nice and right, blinkered, moralistic, europeanised,
enervated? By saying ARMANI / dada. ARMANI / dada is the world soul, ARMANI / dada is the pawnshop. ARMANI /
dada is the world’s best lily-milk soap. And in questions of aesthetics, the key is quality.
Like Kate Moss doing Ashtanga Yoga gigantically sculpted in marble. A line of poetry is a chance to get rid of all the
filth that clings to this accursed language, as if put there by stockbrokers’ hands, hands worn smooth by coins. All
the words are other people’s inventions. I want my own stuff, my own rhythm and all I can think of is Kate Moss’s

Johanna Tinzl and Stefan Flunger employ their recently created series of works to move literally and metaphorically along the European Union’s external borders. In places where the purpose of high fences, barricades and military patrols is to prevent immigrants from non-European states from crossing Europe’s topographical and/or political borders and fleeing from here to there, the artists educe structural similarities between the places they have visited and present them as the visual essence of their journeys in the exhibition space.

In this context, they see the theme of »translation« not only in the linguistic sense but above all as a spatial and formal-aesthetic principle by which to create multilayered situational transfers. The aspect of transposition and interpretation that is decisive in any translation process, becomes evident in the video »La valla es europeo. The Fence is European.«. During a taxi drive along the fence between Morocco and Melilla, the complexity and explosiveness of the political situation in North Africa is explained in simple words by the taxi driver engaged by Tinzl and Flunger. So that the non-Spanish-speaking passengers can also understand what he has to say, the chauffeur comments on the high barrier – which is erected in three rows and topped with NATO-wire – in an insistent manner throughout the entire trip. However, the viewers of the video do not hear the language of the man from Melilla but a German transcription, which is spoken onto the soundtrack by a local taxi driver. In »La valla es europeo. The Fence is European.« Johanna Tinzl and Stefan Flunger break away from the use of purely documentary strategies in the sphere of art by consciously avoiding documenting up-to-date stories of individual immigrants and so reifying them for the purposes of their art. The language of the taxi driver from the Spanish exclave is used in order to create a connection between the realities of life on the external borders of Europe and those in Central Europe. When the artists show this video in different places, the text from the man from Melilla is translated into the language of the relevant country and repeated by a local taxi driver.

,What Did Tomorrow Bring Us?’, 2001 is a slide projection of two digitally- manipulated separate photos of artist’s parents, followed by the sound of a river. It represents the Communist dream; a generation that was not asked to take personal decisions and be responsible for their lives. Conceptually, it deals with one encounter between the present time and the past moment of this couple, posing this paradox question.

Dejan Kaludjerovic

 was born in Belgrade, ex-Yugoslavia. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 2001. In 2004 he received an MFA from the same Academy. He also studied at the School of Visual Art, New York in 1993- 94, and at the Academy of Applied Arts, Vienna in 2003/04.
